N43

The N43 runs from Ghent all the way to the French border near Mouscron. It’s a hiccup in the landscape, never meant to be there, only to be passed through, functional affection, the kind you also feel for a vacuum cleaner or a raincoat.

The photos that follow were taken in those moments when the road stops posing, when time stumbles for a second, when the ordinary accidentally reveals its soft underbelly. They’re not postcards. They’re an autopsy of the highway.

Stop driving. Step out of the stream. Watch how the light falls on a forgotten façade and how banality suddenly starts to sing. It’s an architectural conga line with no one keeping the beat. Crumbling villas dream of their former grandeur while, right next door, a neon‑lit showroom screams that life is new, shiny, and available for immediate delivery.

Look at the cracks in the asphalt and the autumn leaves scattered across a neglected patch of ground.

The N43 isn’t ugly, it’s simply too honest for anyone rushing past.
